Native Password AutoFill Extension macOS

So one of the people in my family subscription for 1P relies heavily on iCloud Keychain. The nice piece about using the native autofill extension is entries from both show up together in-line. This happens on iOS (or if you use other password managers it secure by each provider but both are offered the same way together).

in terms of migration and allowing those who wish to use both depending on the context. It would be nice to support the native autofill extension, but further it limits exposure or need for safari extension. Should someone not want to use or can't install the extension due to work policy or just rather not use safari extensions

thanks.

Hi Dave!

Thanks! I'm using 1Password Beta and seeing in MacOS: Settings --> Autofill & Passwords --> Autofill from: 1Password as an option to select, and not just Passwords (by Apple). I don't see in MacOS with the Beta the ability to "Set up Codes in" 1Password, as interestingly the field to allow that is able to be toggled, 1Password is not an option. I have seen mention of other password managers become options under this toggle. Is this being explored too?

Here's a Reddit thread on this:

I'm using the latest beta for Mac 8.12.22-15. The release notes say

You can now use 1Password as a macOS AutoFill provider to natively fill and save credentials in Safari and other apps

I am able to toggle 1Password to Autofill from but if I try to autofill anything in Safari I see

Native macOS Autofill is under exploration...

Did someone jump the gun with the release notes because I wasn't expecting to be told it won't work yet?

Great catch! We’re currently rolling out the new macOS AutoFill experience in the latest beta version of 1Password for Mac. If you lock and unlock the 1Password app one more time to load the latest feature flags, you shouldn’t see the “Native macOS AutoFill is under exploration” message anymore.

We’ll share a fuller announcement soon. In the meantime, let us know if you run into any issues with the beta!

Very pleased to see that there is progress -- finally! -- on implementing native autofill for MacOS. Being limited to the browser extension has long been a major source of frustration. I just installed 8.12.22 beta, and it looks promising.

One question -- Is there some technical reason why it's not possible to limit passwords presented in the browser to the collection of vaults selected in the 1Password app? I'd prefer not to see (and perhaps accidentally select) irrelevant passwords. But native autofill on iOS also presents every password for a site, so perhaps it's not just a MacOS issue. The context is that that I share vaults with family members who have their own passwords for sites that I also visit, but most of the time I just want to see my own passwords. I'm sure there are other users in a similar situation. The most convenient solution would be a Safari extension that does nothing but specify a collection of vaults for autofill to choose from. Is there some reason this would be difficult to implement?

Many thanks to the 1Password developers for their work so far on this feature!

Hello, I was really happy to read that autofill is finally supported in the latest beta version!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me (I’m still seeing the same behavior), and 1Password isn’t listed in macOS System settings…

Any ideas?

I'm sorry that you're not seeing the option. Can you try the following:

  1. Make sure that you're using 1Password for Mac version 8.12.22-15 on the beta release channel: Right-click on the 1Password icon in your menu bar, click Settings, click About. Then check the version number.
  2. Restart your Mac.

If that still doesn't work then can you tell me whether you're using a 1Password Families account or a work-provided account? And are you on an Intel-Mac or an Apple Silicon Mac: Mac computers with Apple silicon

I wanted to test out the desktop application provided by Fastmail for macOS.  It of course requires me to log in and I have been using passkeys to login to Fastmail.  Of course 1Password doesn't recognize the app application so macOS tells me I have no passkeys saved for this account and asks me to use a QR code or use a security key.

I have configured macOS settings in a manner I think 1Password recommends (see screenshot) to support passkeys.  The exception is "Set Up Codes" where my only option is the macOS Passwords app.  Not sure what this last option is really doing, still waiting for Apple to document it better.

What am I missing (if anything)? Using passcodes stored in 1Password when logging into apps simply doesn't seem to work on macOS, and I have had similar issues on iOS.  Must I stop using passkeys for these sites or have a password+2FA and a passkey so I can select one or the other?  I do not want to leave 1Password for Apple's app.

Native password autofill integration is available in beta channel.

May 25, 2026

I just read the post Native Password AutoFill Extension macOS.  The post by 1P_Dave 1 month ago seems like something I will look into.  The older posts of that topic (ranging back several years) seem to contribute a whole bunch of noise so I have some reading to do before I jump in.

Thanks for getting me pointed at possible solutions!

I did install the nightly update as recommended by @1P_Dave .  I see no real difference in the 1Password settings that I need to enable to use the "Native Autofill" so I am guessing I do have it enabled.  The discussions I've read in the community seem to avoid the topic of using 1Password to log into 3rd party apps using passkeys.
