Security Key still not working in 1Password Mac app - AUTH-1545 unresolved after 2+ years

I'm writing to add yet another report to this long-standing issue. I have a Google Titan Security Key configured as 2FA for my 1Password account. It works perfectly fine in the browser, but the 1Password Mac app simply does not recognize it. The LED stays off, tapping does nothing, and I'm stuck at the "Tap your security key to finish signing in" screen.

This is the exact same issue reported by multiple users going back to late 2023:

In the October 2025 thread, a moderator acknowledged the issue under internal ticket AUTH-1545 and stated it was "being investigated". It is now April 2026 - six months later and nearly three years since the first reports - and there has been no update, no fix, and no timeline communicated to the community.

This is not an edge case. 1Password actively advertises security key support and encourages users to set them up. When users follow that recommendation, they find themselves locked out of the Mac app with no warning whatsoever. For a product whose entire value proposition is security and reliability, that is unacceptable.

I need a clear answer from the 1Password team:

  1. When will AUTH-1545 be fixed?
  2. If there is no fix planned, say so openly so affected users can make informed decisions about their subscriptions.

Silence on a known, multi-year authentication bug is not acceptable for a paid security product.

Hello @aiko000! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into issues when using your security key with 1Password on your Mac. Our development team is aware of an issue where a small number of users have reported that their security key doesn't work to authenticate the 1Password for Mac desktop app however the issue only seems to affect a small number of users and we haven't yet been able to reproduce the issue on our end even when using the exact same make and model of security key. Most customers using the same security key don't encounter any issues.

For the time being, as a workaround, you can add an authenticator app as a second factor to your 1Password account and then use the authenticator app to add your account to the 1Password for Mac app.

So that our support team can confirm that you're running into the known issue that we're tracking, and so that we can collect some additional information for our development team, I'd like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from your Mac:

Send a diagnostics report (Mac)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

With your email please include:

  • A link to this thread: https://www.1password.community/discussions/1password/security-key-still-not-working-in-1password-mac-app---auth-1545-unresolved-after/169526
  • Your forum username: aiko000!

You should receive an automated reply with a Support ID number.  Please post that number here.  Thanks very much!

I believe the “small number” of users being referred to are ones that have set up PINs for their physical security key. From what I can tell, this issue has been known by the dev team for years but they are waiting for electron to implement a fix. Looks like there is finally traction there so we may actually get a fix soon, but the 1P team should have been honest about it from the start.

1P knows that using an authenticator app as a workaround is not an acceptable answer, but that is always what they have been falling back to. I’ve been keeping an eye on this issue for years, and it has been disappointing to see how support has reacted. I don’t think it’s true at all that they haven’t been able to reproduce the issue. I almost switched to Proton Pass because of this, but they aren’t quite caught up to the same feature set of 1P.

@travis

Thanks for writing in. I have a PIN set up for my own security key, but I haven’t been able to reproduce the issue on any Mac, so having a PIN isn’t the sole condition that triggers the issue.

Out of curiosity, are you still having trouble with security keys in the latest version of the 1Password for Mac desktop app, 8.12.34? We recently reworked how the desktop app handles security keys, and I’d be interested to know whether you’re still seeing the issue.
