Question

How can I customize password generator rules for different websites?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using 1Password’s password generator and I’m trying to understand the best way to handle websites that have different password requirements.

Some sites require a specific combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, while others restrict certain special characters or have specific password-length limits.

Is there a way in 1Password to customize the password generator settings for an individual website, or does the generator need to be adjusted manually each time?

I’d also be interested to know how other users deal with sites that reject an automatically generated password because of their own character restrictions.

Thanks for any advice or recommendations.

Hi,

I’ve run into this with websites that have stricter or unusual password requirements. From what I understand, 1Password’s Smart Passwords will try to follow the requirements provided by the website, but if the site has restrictions that aren’t detected correctly, you can open the Password Generator and customize the recipe manually.

For example, you can switch to a custom/random password and adjust the length, numbers, and symbols to match what the particular site accepts. If a site rejects a generated password because of a forbidden character, generating another password with the appropriate recipe should resolve that.

One limitation is that the custom recipe isn’t saved as a separate permanent rule for each individual website. So if a particular site has unusual requirements, you may need to adjust the generator when creating a password for that site.

It would also be useful to report the problematic website to 1Password if its password requirements aren’t being detected correctly, since Smart Passwords are designed to use website-specific requirements when available.

Hope that helps, for more than information visit the site.

Hello @shaoor thank for reaching out.

The information @jam william  shared in the earlier reply is correct: when Smart password is enabled, 1Password tries to identify the password requirements provided by the website and generate a password that matches them. If the site doesn’t expose its requirements in a way that 1Password can detect, or if it applies additional restrictions, the suggested password may not be accepted. In that situation, you can open the 1Password Password Generator and create a custom password.

As mentioned in the earlier reply, these custom settings aren’t currently saved as a separate permanent rule for each individual website. That being said, I can certainly submit a feature request on your behalf to let our Product team know you’d like to have that option available. If that interests you, can you share some more context about your use case?

Additionally,  I wasn’t able to create an account on the site you shared so I couldn’t fully test the password requirements or confirm the behavior myself. If you’re able to share the exact account-creation page, the requirements shown by the site, and the error message you receive, I’d be happy to investigate further. Please don’t share any passwords or other sensitive account information.

@ChrisC1P What does “password requirements provided by the website” actually mean? Is there a standard mechanism that web sites use to tell password managers what their password complexity rules are? Or does 1Password manually maintain their own list?
