After June 28th update, are we required to have a 1password account?

After the latest update, I can't get the Chrome extension to progress beyond the "1Password is almost ready to go" screen. The native Mac app works, but the browser extension won't open my vault. I don't want an online 1Password account, only access to my local vault. Prior to this update, the browser extension worked as expected.
