Category and Custom Field Improvements
I've been a loyal 1Password user since my college years. Over time, it's evolved from being just a place to store passwords into a digital vault for all kinds of sensitive information.
I understand 1Password's design decision to keep its item categories fixed, and I've done my best to work within that system. However, there are limitations to that, and I would like to offer some of my suggestions that should not be too difficult to implement.
Suggestions
- For National IDs and Licenses:
- Rename the "Driver Licenses" category to "Licenses".
- Add a new field called "License Type" and add preset options like:
- Driver’s License
- Identification Card (for non-drivers)
- Learner Permit
- National ID
- For Credit Card Items:
- Add a "Cardholder Role" field with preset options like:
- Primary Cardholder
- Authorized User
- Under the "Type" field, allow a "Store Card" option. Used for cards like:
- Amazon Store Card
- Macy’s Store Card
- Lowe’s Advantage Card
- Add a "Cardholder Role" field with preset options like:
- For Physical Device Passwords:
- I’ve been storing these under "Logins" or "Passwords", which works, but a dedicated category for hardware credentials (like Apple Watch, iPhone, Windows PC, Ledger Nano, etc.) would be better.
- Currently, I just tag these items under "physical devices" to make them easier to find. I'm aware that not every device has an automatic login feature; however, sometimes it's nice to store even the tiniest of passwords in the vault.
- I do see a "Wireless Router" category (I use this as well), but it might be worth adding a new "Physical Devices" category or combining these.
- For Passport Items:
- The "Type" field is currently blank. I suggest adding preset options like:
- Passport
- Passport Card
- Permanent Resident Card
- Certificate of Identity
- Travel Document (not the same as a Passport)
- The "Type" field is currently blank. I suggest adding preset options like:
These changes would help users like me better categorize non-standard but essential items without breaking the overall design philosophy.

Hey mrjackyliang — there’s a ton of great stuff in here, and I really appreciate how much thought you put into it! It’s always helpful to see how folks are actually using things.
You’ve surfaced a bunch of really smart suggestions, and explained the use cases in a way that makes it super clear why they’d help. I’ll be sharing this with the team, and there are definitely a few feature requests for me to file. 🙂
