Feature request: Display vaults in search results on desktop

Good day 1Password team! I would like to request a feature that would allow to display vault names in search after clicking "Show all matching items". As it currently is with version 8.10.45, the desktop application can display vault names below the search bar when searched for. However, when I click "Show all matching items", there is no search results. That would be especially helpful for those of us that have a few thousand vaults. I do know that the search by vault name is available on the web version of 1Password, but it would be much more productive to have it all consolidated in the desktop app as well. Thank you for consideration!

1Password Version: 8.10.45
Extension Version: 2.27.1
OS Version: Windows 11 Pro
Browser: Chrome

  • Hello JadeCoffee! 👋

Thank you for the suggestion! I wanted to learn more about your request, am I correct in understanding that you'd like to see the vault name listed next to each item in the item list in the centre column of the app (the column I outlined in red):

Can you tell me a little more about why you'd like to see the vault name there? You can already see the vault name at the top of an item's details by clicking on an item.

Let me know if I misunderstood your suggestion. 🙂

    Good day Dave!

    Thanks for replying!
What I meant was the search window, specifically when you search for items and click "Show all matching items"

After clicking "Show all matching items" while searching for a vault name (in my case, for instance "zgrp"), the desktop app shows a "No results for "zgrp"" in search.

I was wondering if it would be possible for you implement the search by vault name within the desktop application :)

Thank you for those screenshots! Choosing Show all matching items will produce all individuals items that match your search result, but this list doesn't include other types of search results such as vaults or tags since those are not items.

Can you tell me a little more about the scenarios where you search for a vault name and get more results back than can fit into the results in the search dropdown? Your screenshot seems to indicate that you've added a shortened form of your organization's name to a number of vaults, have you considered using a collection to group those vaults together so that you can view all of them in the sidebar with the exclusion of other vaults:

I'd love to know more about your use case so that I can file this with the team. 🙂

    Thank you Dave!

As you've noticed on the screenshots, we do have shortened organization name as a prepend in our vault naming scheme - in fact, there's a whole system for naming the vaults. My example might not be the most indicative of the issue we are facing, since I cannot see all the vaults in the organization. Since 1Password does not support dynamic updates for duplicate items inside different vaults, when we need to share a certain password with a certain individual and retain control over it to avoid foul play (zero trust and all that), we create a different vault - and name it according to our internal naming scheme. As you can imagine, with time that creates a clutter of thousands of vaults and duplicates of vaults - and searching through them in list view (especially for account owners) is kind of a nightmare. I do understand that that there is a way to search for a specific vault via the web interface, but it would definitely be nice to have that same functionality built into the desktop app - so that there is a way to sort through, remove duplicates, or just generally get an idea of what is shared where through the desktop application.

TLDR: The current systems in 1Password lead to thousands of vaults and duplicates, making it difficult to search and manage. While the web interface allows vault searches, adding similar functionality to the desktop app would help sort, remove duplicates, and track shared items more easily.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've passed along your use case and your feature request to our Product team. While I can't make any promises, the team will look into expanding 1Password's vault search functionality in the future.
