Thanks. For the time being I have used the settings to turn off the appearance of the 1Password icon in fields entirely in Safari--and use either the toolbar or menu bar icons to access 1Password when I need to. Oddly enough, the in-field icon works just the way I want it to in Chrome. Please let's keep it that way.
