The archive was previously called trash. Each vault has one. It was renamed from trash to better differentiate it from the 'recently deleted' items function. Items that previously were in or would've gone to trash now go to the archive, until/unless you delete them from there. You could certainly use the built-in archive to store items that aren't in use but you may want to reference in the future, or you can continue using an entirely separate vault. There isn't a "right" way here — it depends on what fits with your workflow. I will say though, perhaps ironically, your archive vault will have an archive within it, just as it would've had trash previously.
