Issue with autofill and sign in automatically on ChatGPT/OpenAI

I've noticed an issue with autofill and sign in automatically on the login page for ChatGPT/OpenAI.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Go to https://auth.openai.com/log-in/
  2. Use 1Password to autofill the email address.
  3. The site will suddenly ask you for your phone number instead of your password, and no matter how I type my phone number, it just says that it's not a valid phone number.

What I believe is happening is that when 1Password tries to sign in automatically, it "clicks" the button highlighted at the bottom in the screenshot below. The Swedish text on the button says Fortsätt med mobil, which means Continue with mobile in English. When I click on that button, the same thing happens, it just switches the email address field to a phone number field.

My workaround until this can be fixed is to disable sign in automatically for this site. Could you please take a look at this and fix the autofill/auto sign in settings for this site?

I'm sorry that 1Password is selecting the wrong option when autosubmitting your login credentials on ChatGPT's website. This is a known issue that our development team is currently tracking, hopefully it will be fixed soon.

For the time being, you can workaround the issue by turning off autosubmit for ChatGPT:

    1. Click the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar.
    2. Search for the login item.
    3. Click the three vertical dots in the top right of the window and choose Don't sign in automatically.

    I hope that helps.

I've spent time to figure out why this behaviour happened before to realise that it's the autofill with 1password that cause the login issue in ChatGPT. Thats a new problem cause it seems that the autofill was working well few weeks ago when I logged to ChatGPT in my current browser.

Disabling the 1password autoconnect for this site fix the issue.

I'm glad that you were able to workaround the issue, I've added your report to our internal work item for the bug.

I have the same issue. Typing the email manually helped. I can then use 1Password to autofill the password.

    AJCxZ0 that's interesting and weird.

Yesterday, I could sign in manually by either typing, copy/pasting, or drag-and-drop the email address from 1Password.

Today, I get the same error 409 as you, no matter which of the manual methods I use. And it's the same on both https://auth.openai.com/log-in/ and https://auth.openai.com/log-in.

The original issue still remains for me though. If I re-enable auto-login, 1Password still just "clicks" the phone number button instead of the continue button.

The issue happens in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and on different devices running both Windows 10 and 11. However, Firefox on iOS does not have this issue, so it might only affect Windows devices.

I'm running the latest versions of Windows and the web browsers mentioned above.

The 1Password desktop app is running version 8.10.75 (81075001).

The browser plugin is using version 8.10.72.25 in Firefox and 8.10.72.27 in Chrome.

The message about error 409 is clearly on OpenAI's side, but the auto-login feature using the wrong button to continue on the login page, seem like a 1Password issue. I've never got the error 400 message about the password being too long, so that issue does not apply to my case.

Having just purged all stored data from my browser profile, I tested this. Autofilling my email address and manually clicking (Continue), I got a different result:

From ChatGTP, clicking (Log in) redirected to https://auth.openai.com/log-in (with no trailing /), where 1Password autofilled my email address, resulting in the Password field appearing, which 1Password offered to autofill. Autofilling the password resulted in

Repeating the process with (Try again) produced the same result.

Clearly this is a different issue from the one you experience and the status shows recent, but no current, known login problems.

After a password reset, my autofilled login is now working normally.

I'm glad that you're no longer seeing the 400 or 409 message after resetting your password. I'll keep an eye out for further reports.
