Passkey dependency on phone

Before jumping on the passkey bandwagon I'm trying to understand a little better how they work. From what I understand, it "replaces" your password with this passkey. To use your passkey, it requires biometric login (face, fingerprint, etc.) so you would need to have your phone with you anytime you wanted to log in to a passkey protected site, similar to how Authy works with 2FA codes.

    Hi Dave,

    I was mostly wondering for other websites, i.e., Amazon. Do Passkeys (in 1Password) require your phone to “unlock” them with its biometric security, since most desktops don’t have that functionality?

    Thanks for clarifying. While you can use your phone to sign in to a website using a passkey that you've saved in 1Password, you can also sign in using 1Password on your desktop. To sign in to a website using a passkey saved in 1Password, you'll unlock 1Password using the same method that you currently use to unlock 1Password on your desktop when filling a saved password. That might mean biometrics but it can also mean using your account password if you don't use biometrics on your desktop.

    Thanks Dave for clarifying that, After dealing with the Authy desktop EOL issue, I'm just trying to make sure that it does require my phone if I don't have it handy.
