Underwhelming Universal Autofill

Having created a proprietary solution myself to safely insert those passwords that could not be managed by 1Password, not least of all its own Master Password, I viewed the introduction of version 8 with a mixture of excitement and sadness ...as I sensed my pet project was about to face retirement. I anticipated that with its new access to MacOS APIs, 1Password would not only manage Administrator credentials but also provide integrated support for filling-in passwords for encrypted disks, diskimages and backups in applications such as DiskImageMounter, CarbonCopyCloner. NordLocker, Imazing, etc. Indeed, it would have been nice for 1Password to have a dedicated item catagory for encrypted volumes, something I have been requiesting for years.

Alas, despite the fanfare surrounding Universal Autofill its potential is so unfulfilled that I'm left somewhat underwhelmed.

I'm less bothered by the design although it would seem that media coverage is parroting the same nonsense that it follows the design language of MacOS 11 and 12 — as if they were basing their opinions on a press release rather than from a genuine user-perspective. It most certainly does NOT look or feel like a native MacOS and that is less to do with its use of Electron/Rust and everything to do with Agilebits determination that they know better. They get away with this only because most other apps are compliant ...if every app developer chose to rip-up the UI/UX guidelines then the MacOS user-experience as we know it would cease to exist.

Please share your feedback.

    Hello @abriden,

I'm sorry to learn that Universal Autofill hasn't lived up to your expectations. Could you let me know a little more about what specifically you'd like to see it do? For example, is it mostly related to the password fields in the applications you mentioned?

My understanding (and testing so far) is that Universal Autofill can fill most places where it's possible to fill something on a Mac.

    Specifically:

    • In native apps and in the browser
    • at MacOS administrative prompts
    • at the terminal when acting as an administrator

But if there are specific instances where this isn't working for you, we'd love to know about it so we can chase down the particulars in pursuit of the most robust possible functionality. I'll look forward to hearing from you!
