Feedback: 1PW8 Mac Beta menubar item is mostly useless and the loss of mini panel is a deal breaker
In the 1Password 8 beta for Mac the menubar item is now kind of useless - it no longer opens the useful mini panel and instead only has options to open the main 1Password app (I already know how to do that, thanks), to open the Quick Access palette (which isn't as user friendly or as useful as the old mini panel), and to lock or quit the app. To do anything useful with the menu item I have to click something twice before I can even start searching. It's a small thing but it's frustrating - this way the menu item isn't actually a useful utility or shortcut, it's more like a fancy bookmark that takes up menubar space. Having it just pop open the Quick Access palette automatically would be more useful in most "quick search" cases.
But the main problem I've run into with v8 is the loss of the mini panel. With the old menubar item I could click it once to immediately see the mini panel and then I could quickly type in the keywords I wanted and then use arrow up/down in the list to show the corresponding entry contents in the main portion of the panel. This allowed me to quickly and easily see ALL of the entry's values which was especially helpful with entries that hold more information than just a username and password. Most of the entries that I deal with on a regular basis have many more fields than just username/password and I would use this method as a very easy way of getting to the info I needed. For example I could see how much time was left before an OTP token regenerated, I could read a note in the entry, I could click to copy a custom value like a complicated command line argument, I could glance at a phone number or the 3-digit credit card code, I could hold option down and view an obfuscated field, I could copy a secondary/related password for the entry... and I can't do any of that easily from the "Quick Access" palette.
In 1PW7 I could quickly and easily find what I was looking for and I could easily interact with all of the items in the entry all without having to jump through any hoops to get at what I wanted and all right there in one place that was easy to see. Quick, easy, unobtrusive, and useful. However, in 1PW8 I now have to arrow down the list, hit right arrow to see only some of the fields in the entry, hit left arrow to get back to the original list, down arrow to see the next entry ... and so on - and that still won't let me get to the other values in the entry that I'm looking for, like the notes or custom fields, without opening the entry in a new window. The v7 menubar item would also remember my last searches which was handy when I'd have to access related entries in an order, now I have to start the search over again each time.
It really feels to me like one of the most useful features of 1Password was removed in this new version and that the utility of this amazing tool has taken a large step backwards. I guess this is kind of a rant, and I apologize for that, but I'm frustrated because I love 1Password and use it dozens of times every day, but even with the other real improvements v8 comes with I can't see me upgrading to 8 and losing these features.

I've been a registered user here on the forums since 2008 - longer than many 1P employees. I've used 1Password for that same amount of time. That's 15 years.

And I've loved every single second of it, until 1Password 8.
\n\n
The regression in usability is too much of a pain point for me that I would remain loyal if a competitor brought on a better product. I also hated that they went with Electron instead of a native solution.
\n\n
But, speed wise the concerns I had with 1Password 8 did not manifest, however, these usability problems are a killer. I miss 1Password 7 but I also don't want to downgrade to an older product that will not be upgraded in future with new features.
\n\n
Overall I have to agree that there's been zero acknowledgment by the 1Password staff that 1Password 8 took a turn for the worse. So I have to assume the staff and founders of 1Password are happy with the new product. And for this reason I also do not expect any positive changes down the line.

At this point, I’m tolerating 1P8 for lack of a better alternative. The amount of functional regressions in the desktop app combined with the months old bugs in the iOS version is flat out unacceptable. As soon as a comparable competitor comes along I’m gone.

I had used 1Password for what seemed like forever, but, after struggling with 1P8 for a few months, I just had to move on. Kept my access to these forums and every month or so I check back to see how issues that users brought up are being resolved. Most (like this one regarding the Mini interface) have not had any progress whatsoever. It seems that the developers think they got it right, and no amount of feedback from users is going to convince them otherwise. Beyond disappointing.

It saddens me that Mini interface was taken away. Quick Access is a joke compared to 1P7's Mini access via menu bar.

I won't hold my breath it coming back, but I'm not the only one who feels this way. All the people in my family I've made use 1P think that 1P8 is a step backward and they are very frustrated with the lack of the proper Mini interface that was so good in 1P7.

I have a very hard time imagining that the 1P community of users would have voted \"yes\" to this change of Mini interface if they were asked before 1P8 was developed. And for that reason I'm disappointed that the 1P team decided to make the product inferior. You should never change for the sake of change.

I agree that this change was the worst feature of 1password 8. I'm still using 7 and will likely do so until I'm forced to change. Its fine to make a new search feature, but don't remove the click interface. The whole app is not as user friendly for legacy users.

1P_Dave​ Some feedback to pass on to the 1Password Product team: The removal of 1Password Mini in 1Password 8 is the only reason I haven't upgraded all my laptops to use the latest version of 1Password (up from v7). I find 1Password to be much less useful when I always have to open the full app to find/fill passwords, especially outside of browsers.

1P_Dave That’s disappointing to hear. Quick Access can only be made better by making it look like the Mini interface. As it stands, Quick Access is nothing more than extra steps and removed functionality.

While we don't have any plans to bring back the old 1Password Mini, our team is paying attention to the feedback that we're collecting on the forums (and other places) as to how we can improve Quick Access in the future to make it more useful for folks such as yourself. 🙂

Well, it’s been 6 months and I still hate Quick Access, possibly even more so than before. Bring back the Mini! Your users are fed up with these functional regressions in 1P8!

DavidB I mean it would be literally anytime you needed something in 1P but are in any other app besides the browser. The examples are practically infinite.
