Windows app vs 1password-setup...exe

What is the difference btwn installing 1Password using 1passwordSetup-latest.exe and whatever is meant by the windows app?  Whenever I try to download anything using the term windows app all I get is the usual 1Password....exe.

Im trying to export my wife's passwords to a csv file and apparently I need to do it with the app, not with her usual access to 1Password using just the Firefox 1Password extension and whatever that opens when she starts 1Password that way.

  • Hello gtomseeley! 👋

Thanks for reaching out! You can install the 1Password for Windows app a few different ways including:

Both options work great! If you prefer to get all of your apps from the Microsoft Store then you can get 1Password there as well.

You do indeed need to install the desktop app to export your items. You can read more here: How to export your data from the 1Password desktop app

If there a particular reason why you're looking to export your wife's passwords to a CSV file?

      Thank you.  I'll pursue this.

My reason for trying to save her passwords to a csv file  is mostly cuz I wanted a belt to go with my suspenders.  At the time I posted, we were planning to buy a new desktop running windows 11 and I didn't trust myself to export or transfer 1PW and her data and the Firefox extension properly and I worried about losing her data!  And I KNEW WITHOUT A SHADOW OF  DOUBT I'd never be able to afford the alimony I'd have to pay if I lost her passwords!

We have gotten the new unit up and running and so far her passwords seem to be working just like they should be!

      Thx again.

I'm happy that everything worked out!

If you and your wife are using 1Password 8 then all of your items are automatically backed up to your 1Password accounts, you don't need to export and import your items to a CSV file. You can verify this by checking to see if you see all of your items when you log in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app).

When it comes time to install 1Password on a new device, just install the 1Password app and sign into your 1Password account. All of your items will magically appear on the new device! Make sure that you have a copy of your Emergency Kit handy since you'll need that information (along with your account password) to sign in.
