4 years agoBiometric unlock is here!
Hello beta testers 👋 Today is finally the day that I can unwrap a feature that we’ve been building for quite some time and I cannot tell you how excited I am to share this with you. From the moment that we started this project to bring CLI 2.0 to life, we have had a clear mission to make the lives of our CLI users easier - whether you’re a developer or an admin user for a 1Password account. And while that may seem like a pretty simple goal, we carried it with us for every single task and in every single meeting and line of code. Today, we are excited to announce that biometric unlock is now available for our beta testers. I’ve had the privilege of testing it out myself now for quite some time and I can assure you that the hype is real...using biometrics rather than your account password works like magic.
Now keep in mind this is still a beta version so if you do find something that works less than ideal please start up a new thread and let us know. We want to hear every bit of feedback that you have to share on this feature and remember - we will be picking the most insightful pieces of feedback shared during this beta and awarding some awesome prizes 😉 so be sure to share anything that comes up during testing.
Here are the instructions for getting started:
Windows or MacOS: https://developer.1password.com/docs/cli/use-biometric-unlock/.
Debian or Ubuntu
1. Change to the nightly channel: echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/1password-archive-keyring.gpg] https://downloads.1password.com/linux/debian/amd64 edge main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/1password.list
2. Update 1Password: sudo apt update && sudo apt install 1password
CentOS, Fedora, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux
1. Change to the nightly channel: sudo sh -c 'echo -e "[1password]\nname=1Password Edge Channel\nbaseurl=https://downloads.1password.com/linux/rpm/edge/\$basearch\nenabled=1\ngpgcheck=1\nrepo_gpgcheck=1\ngpgkey=\"https://downloads.1password.com/linux/keys/1password.asc\"" > /etc/yum.repos.d/1password.repo'
2. Update 1Password: sudo dnf update 1password
Note: Please check that you’re on the latest nightly release 8.5.0-112.
In order to use this new feature, you will need to make sure you’re running our “Nightly release” for 1Password 8 beta which https://developer.1password.com/docs/cli/use-biometric-unlock/#requirements. Just as a quick note, our Nightly builds are designed to test brand new experimental features so please keep that in mind when choosing what accounts to test this with. As always, if you have any questions, please start up a new thread in this forum and we’ll be more than happy to help!

Hi @ag_tyler, I'd love to try this out on Arch Linux. Do you have a direct link to either the tgz or deb package for 8.5.0-112?

Just to add this bit - if for any reason you need to revert back to the beta or stable release you can follow https://support.1password.com/betas/ or https://support.1password.com/install-linux/.
