How is the WSL support supposed to work?

An item in the release notes of 1Password for Windows 8.10.16-26 struck my attention:

• The 1Password SSH agent now supports the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work for me out of the box. How is this supposed to work internally? Do we still need to use npiperelay for this to work?
