Step 7: Transition and train your team
With your data imported, your account set up, and your team invited, the next step is making sure everyone knows how to use 1Password effectively — and securely.
Clean up old storage
Once everything is in 1Password, delete it from its former home (like another password manager, browser password manager, or spreadsheets). This ensures credentials aren’t left behind in less secure places. Encourage your team to do the same.
Train your team
Good training is the key to adoption. We recommend starting with our video library for end users, especially:
- Standard Team Training: if your team signs in with their 1Password account directly.
- Team Training: Unlock with SSO: if your team uses an identity provider.
Don’t skip the Browser Extension tutorial. Installing the 1Password extension is essential to the full experience. Without it, the app may feel incomplete to new users, and adoption can suffer.
Separate work and personal data
Each employee has a private Employee vault meant only for work-related credentials specific to them. Remind your team that this vault does not travel with them if they leave the company.
For personal use, encourage your team to sign up for a 1Password Families account. If you’re on the 1Password Business plan, every team member gets a free Families account — a great perk to highlight! They can redeem it easily by following these steps.
Educate your admins
Encourage Owners and Admins to watch the 1Password for Admins tutorial series. These short videos cover setup, best practices, and tips to make administration smooth and effective.
Set a migration deadline
Finally, set and communicate a deadline for moving credentials into 1Password. This creates clarity and ensures older systems can be fully retired. Team members can use our import instructions to bring their own credentials into their new 1Password accounts.
