What content will be stored in 1Password?

While this may seem like a silly question, it's worth taking a moment to consider. After all, 1Password is designed to protect more than just passwords.

Whether you’re getting started with a password manager for the first time or transitioning from another password manager, now is a great time to audit your secrets. A secrets audit is the act of taking inventory of all the company secrets (secrets here being a generic term for any highly sensitive information, whether it be passwords, credit card numbers, secure documents, etc.) as well as who has access to that information.

This exercise can help you uncover information that’s old and outdated and can be deleted reducing risk, or certain people who have access that they don’t need to perform their function. 

• What types of items do we want stored in 1Password? 
• Where do these items exist currently and in what format?
• Who has access to these items currently? Do they absolutely need access to perform their function? (Consider the PoLP)
• What items should not be stored in 1Password?
• While you can securely store many types of items in 1Password, there may be items you do not want stored in 1Password. 
• For example you may want to prohibit storing Documents in 1Password if you have specific legal or compliance requirements to store documents in a particular way. 
• Where do these items exist currently and in what format?
• How will they be added to 1Password?
• Manual addition
• Import from another password manager
• Import from a document
