1Password 7 deprecation
Hey skatch! đ
I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. Change isnât always easy, and I get that moving to a new version can bring mixed feelingsâespecially if 1Password 7 was working well for you.
That said, I have to admit, Iâm struggling to figure out exactly whatâs frustrating you about 1Password 8. You mentioned âfundamental issues,â but didn't actually mention what those issues are, so itâs tough to know whatâs actually getting in your way. If thereâs something in particular thatâs slowing you down, weâd love to hear about it. Otherwise, weâre left guessingâwhich isnât particularly helpful for either of us. đ
As for the deprecation, just to clear things up, this isnât a blanket end-of-life for all versions of 1Password 7.
Whatâs being deprecated:- All versions of 1Password 6.
- Older versions of 1Password 7. Specifically, any version older than
- Windows: 7.9.836 (build 836)
- Mac (App Store): 7.9.11 (build 70911001)
- Mac (Direct Download): 7.9.11 (build 70911000)
- iOS: 7.10.2 (buid 71002000)
- Android: 7.9.4 (build 70904004)
This means that if youâre already on the latest version of 1Password 7, youâre still in a supported state, though weâd still recommend upgrading to 1Password 8 for ongoing security and performance improvements.

Speaking for myself: local vaults.

Thanks for the reply, I'm sorry for the delay in replying. There aren't any plans to bring back standalone vaults, 1Password.com vaults are more secure and allow for more functionality when it comes to sharing and other uses.
Is there a particular reason why you wanted to use standalone vaults? I'd love to be able to address your concerns or share your specific use case with the team.

It is simply not true that having data in my cloud as well as on my computer is more secure than only having it on my computer â more copies + more connected == more risk. I agree that it is easier to share, but I don't want to do that. I have been a 1P customer since 2008 (!!) while upgrading with every major release, and I'm out for as long as local vaults are out.
My "particular reason" is the reason that customers of V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, V6, and V7 of the product were willing to purchase and use it pre-mandatory cloud.- 1P_Dave7 months ago

Thank you for sticking with 1Password since 2008! All of the information stored in 1Password accounts is end-to-end encrypted, and only the person who creates an account holds the keys. Unlike older standalone vaults that are only protected using your password, your 1Password account data is protected and encrypted using a secret that is derived from both your account password and your Secret Key. This secret keeps the information inside of your account safe and it's mathematically impossible for an attacker to access your data without these secrets.
In addition to the above, you're also able to further secure your 1Password account using two-factor authentication, something that you can't do with standalone vaults.
If youâd like to, you can learn more about the 1Password security model. If you want an even deeper dive into our security design, you can review our white paper.

Most people don't just use 1Password on a single device, they sync their items to all of their devices including their mobile phones. With a 1Password account's Secret Key providing additional protection on top of the account password, 1Password.com accounts are more secure than old standalone vaults and offer a better user experience. It's why most customers, who were using the standalone vaults of previous versions, have now migrated to using a 1Password account.
