1password 8 Installer assumes running as system admin

Hello,

My default user does not have administrator access to my system. I had to login as admin to run the installer, instead of just being asked to provide the username and password for an administrator account.

It was easy enough to login as an admin and then run the installer, just not as smooth as most apps installation.

Fabulous! It worked just as expected, and I am now reveling in the gloriousness that is the Quick Actions dialog. Thanks much!

  • Hi @ostertoaster,

The problem existed not between your keyboard and chair, but between mine. We changed the filename 1PasswordBeta.zip -> 1Password Beta.zip, and I missed updating the forum thread. The thread has been updated with the correct link: 1Password 8 installer.

Please give that installer a try.

    Thanks, Jack_P_1P!

I ran into another issue, in that I was continually clicking on the wrong link. The Beta Releases page has 2 download links:

No matter what link I click, I always end back up at this post:
    https://1password.community/discussion/122136/1password-8-for-mac-early-access

That link downloads a seemingly old installer with a modified ate of 12/3/2021 that fails at the copy-to-Applications-folder step.

I'm sure there's something glaringly obvious I'm missing, but I'm struggling to find the new beta build to download?

    Yours in PEBKAC,
    Mike

    Hey @ostertoaster:

This week's beta is out, including this in the changelog:

In macOS, standard user accounts are now prompted for an administrator’s password when they try to install 1Password.

If you'd like to give it a try, you're more than welcome to! 🙂 1Password for Mac Beta Releases

Thanks, dteare, for the update! I'm very anxious to try out Quick Access, but will wait until a non-admin compatible installer drops. That can be my contribution to beta QA. :) I'm still surprised this wasn't in there to begin with, but I've not spent much time using betas, 1Password or otherwise, so perhaps my expectations are too high.

    Thanks again!

You're timing is perfect, @ostertoaster! While reviewing the release notes for tomorrow's beta I noticed that @chadseld has included a change to allow the installer to run as a non-admin user. We typically release betas on Tuesday morning so very soon this should no longer be an issue.

    Thanks for raising this issue.

Yeah, this is a non-starter for me too. All modern installers seem to be able to note that the user doesn't have appropriate permissions and prompt for a different account. I'm kind of surprised that a security tool doesn't assume that most users using it are also cautious enough to run as a Standard user primarily. Any updates on this?

  • Thank you @frenn,

You are correct, the installer does assume it's running as a system administrator. I'll be filing a ticket for us to improve this.
