1Password email/secret key remembered after MacOS factory reset

So I just did a factory reset of my MacBook Pro. The option I picked was Erase all Content and Settings where it deletes everything, even my other volumes.

After restarting did initial MacOS setup, logged into my Apple ID, downloaded Brave and then used that to download 1Password. Upon first boot of the app, as you can see in the screenshots, my email address was pre-filled like I had already used it on this computer. I picked my username and it had my correct secret key pre-filled as well.

I'm pretty confused where this information came from. I checked the Passwords app in MacOS and I don't have 1Password anywhere in there.

  • Hello ackmanx! 👋

Thanks for the question! As a convenience feature, to make signing into the 1Password apps across multiple Apple devices easier, if you've set up your device with an Apple ID and have iCloud Keychain enabled, then 1Password will store a copy of your Secret Key in iCloud Keychain so that you don't have to type in again when you reinstall the 1Password app on your Apple devices where you're signed into the same Apple ID.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Hi Dave,

If I understand correctly, you're saying it's stored in the Keychain but not the Passwords app, right? How can I remove it from my keychain and verify it's gone?

If you have an account being suggested in the 1Password app that you no longer use then you can remove it by right-clicking on the account suggestion and then choosing “Remove Account from List”. Make sure to carefully review the warning message and then choose “Confirm Account Removal” if you wish to proceed with removing the account suggestion.

If you're currently using the 1Password app with an active 1Password account, there's no way to prevent the 1Password app from saving your Secret Key to the Keychain.

The information in the Keychain is end-to-end encrypted (like 1Password) so that no one, not even Apple, is able to access it. Only you can access it. Can you tell me a little more about why you'd want to remove the Secret Key from the Keychain? I'd be happy to pass your feedback along to the team.
