Autofill for Safari behavior

#1 Please, I beg of you, add the ability to edit the suggested password before saving. To do that now, I have to save the new login, then go to the app, click edit, make the change, save it, copy the password, go back to Safari, and paste it into the box. Several times, that has resulted in the account being created without the edits or with an entirely new suggested password.

#2 In Safari on both iOS and Mac, the autofill box covers the label field below the one being filled. It’s particularly bad on iPhone because if there’s more than one fill suggestion, it blocks the entire screen below the active field. I turned off “Show filling suggestions” but that defeats the purpose of the iOS extension because on most sites, I can just use the passwords button that appears above the keyboard.

Changing the collapse behavior so that it stays collapsed on that page until you expand it again would remedy that (and is something you should do anyway).

Thank you for reaching out! I'll respond below:

I'm sorry for the frustration. Can you tell me a little more about the scenarios when you need to edit the suggested password? Usually I would expect the generated password to be good "as is". Are you using the "Smart Password" generator as your default? It's designed to create a strong and unique password that also matches the requirements of the current website that you're on. You can check by following these steps:

    1. Open the custom password generator in the 1Password pop-up: Custom password generator
    2. Make sure that "Smart Password" is selected as the Type and that "Use as default for suggestions" is toggled on.

You can tap on the 1Password icon in the field to dismiss the suggestion. Alternatively, you can turn off "Show autofill suggestion when a form field is in focus"  in the 1Password for Safari settings page so that you only see suggestions when you tap on the 1Password icon in a field.

#1 I prefer memorable passwords so that I can remember them and/or type them when the auto-fill is unavailable. The passwords it generates don't always fulfill the password requirements for a given site. Sometimes I make changes to make it more memorable for me for that site (or because it’s funny). Here’s what I want: The 1Password extension generates a memorable password, I make an edit to the password, then 1Password saves the edited password to the new or updated Login item.

#2 I turned off “Show autofill,” which does keep it from blocking the screen until I need to use it. My point is that turning that off mostly defeats the purpose of the extension. It’s also worth noting that the placement of the icon conflicts with the show/hide toggle for password visibility on sites that have that. I guess my feedback is that the extension is sort of unwieldy in a way that limits its utility.

Thank you for the feedback regarding the placement of the 1Password icon and suggestions menu as well as the request to be able to edit suggestions before they're saved. I've passed your experience along to the team internally so that they can consider improvements in the future.

For the time being, it sounds like creating and generating a password using the desktop app and then copying it over to the website in question, rather than using the suggestions from 1Password in the browser, would fit your workflow best.
