It sounds like you've already found how you can customize the auto-lock settings, which is great. After restarting your device or turning on a device that's powered off, you'll still always need to put in your password again. It's an extra step, but it's an important security measure so that if you ever had a device stolen, they couldn't just restart the device and be able to get into 1Password.
Generating a random but memorable password using real words is a great way to make a strong password that isn't too much of a chore to remember. Hard to forget something like orange-assassin-yum-juice!
