Can 1Password 6,7 & 8 Co-exist ?

I have been running 1Password for many years and have been very happy with it. I am now trying to evaluate an upgrade to 1Password8 to make cross platform work and sharing simpler. I know the migration will be too difficult for other family members and so I was hoping to do all the work on my machine so that I can get their vaults into 8 for them. I think I am good getting my vault into 8 but I am having problems running 6 now and so I can not restore one of their vaults so that it is picked up and converted by 7. I was wondering if anyone else had gone through a similar transition and could offer and advice or steps that may help run multiple versions without them interfering with one another.

Thanks for the update. I now have 1Password8 up and running. It is very unfortunate that you have made it so difficult to run different versions side by side to allow users to get some comfort in the new version before commiting to the switch and even worse that you have made it almost impossible to revert on a mac once you have started upgrading. Having now achieved version switching on a mac, I would agree it would be considered impossible for anyone who is not a developer themselves.

That said, I was pleased to discover that I could keep 1password7 and 1password8 on my iPhone as these seem completely independent and sandboxed from one another, at least with 1Password7 as a standalone only app.

  • Hello Roger! 👋

Thanks for the question! I've merged your comments into one thread so that we can keep the conversation in one place. I don't recommend running multiple versions of 1Password at the same time since they will conflict with each other in various ways (some likely unexpected since we haven't tested using multiple versions at the same time).

You can find our upgrade guide, which details the steps needed for someone to upgrade to 1Password 8, here: Upgrade to 1Password 8

That being said, since you're in the middle of a migration/upgrade and since you also have specific questions about a promotion, our support team would be in the best position to assist further. I recommend sending an email to support@1Password.com, please include a link to this thread. After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I'll be able to locate your message and make sure it's gotten to the right place. 🙂

I'm glad that you were able to upgrade!

Just to clarify, different versions of 1Password weren’t intentionally designed to conflict with each other, those issues arise because they use similar technology and do many of the same things. It's why we recommend only running one version at a time on a device.

I see that you have a support ticket open with our support team via email so I'll close this community thread. If you have any other questions or feedback then please reply to my colleague's last email and we can continue the conversation there.

I’m in the process of upgrading from 1Password 6 to 1Password 8. The process has been more complicated than expected, but I believe I now understand the steps. I successfully imported my primary vault into 1Password 7, where I initially saw a message offering the first year free — it appeared to apply to a Family plan. I was about to proceed, but now that message (and the link to that offer) no longer appears when I start 1Password 7.

How can I bring that upgrade message back, or is there another way to access that offer page?
