Can't Upgrade to 1Password 8 on macOS Monterey Computer

My wife and I recently started using 1Password, and she owns a Mac running macOS 12.7.6 Monterey. She installed the 1Password extension for Safari, which I believe is version 8.11.7.2 (if I remember correctly), but when she went to install the full 1Password application, the only thing that came up in the App Store was 1Password 7.  She went ahead and installed that and it seems to work okay, except that it doesn't seem to integrate with the extension, at least not in terms of locking/unlocking.  We could not figure out how to upgrade it to 1Password 8, but after having opened it and used it several times, the last time she opened it, FINALLY she was prompted to upgrade it to version 8.

So she followed that prompt and downloaded the 1Password installer, but when she tries to run the installer, she gets an error message, something to the effect that the developer is unknown and it can't verify that the installer is not malware. The installer is completely blocked from running. How do we get around this?

  • Hello gnlw! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into trouble when installing 1Password 8 on your wife's Mac. 1Password 8 for Mac isn't currently available in the Mac App Store. Instead, you can download the app directly through our website:

If you run into the same message when using a newly downloaded installer from our website then can you post a screenshot of the message that you see so that I can help further?

      Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the problem corrected itself. I guess the 3rd time's a charm. (Or was it the 4th time?) On each previous attempt, the upgrade installer was downloaded (I assume from your website), it had caused that error message and the OS refused to run it, and she deleted it from her downloads folder. A little later, she opened 1Password 7 again, received the prompt to upgrade again, did everything exactly the same as before, and this time did NOT receive the error when trying to run the installer. So v8 was now installed successfully and everything is hunky dory.

I'm utterly baffled and don't know what to say other than I hate everything Apple and this just reinforced that feeling!

Thanks again. So far, I'm very impressed with the responsiveness to issues posted on this forum. Keep up the great work!
