2 years agoExperiment #3 - Nearby Items
Hi y'all!
I can't believe we are already shipping Experiment 3?! This one has a very special place in my heart. This project actually came out of a Hackday we did internally. Everyone was SOOOO excited about it, we wanted to share it with our users to get your feedback.
Nearby Items allows you to assign a location to an item. Then, on mobile only for now, we've added a section to the home tab that shows you items that are close to you physically. Pretty awesome, right?
The basic hypothesis here is that because people are more and more mobile, the items you need quick access to might be different based on where you are in the world. If your building at work has a door code, we'll show you that when you pull up. If you've got a storage shed, we'll show you the combo to the lock when you arrive.
This experiment is our first exploration into physical space. We know we're not "done" but wanted to get early feedback to help shape how this project evolves from here.
We're eager to hear your thoughts on Nearby Items. Let us know what you think below in this thread.
The primary questions I'm trying to answer are:
Does adding a location to an item help you get things done faster and with less friction? Do you see value in continuing to explore physical locations for items in any form?
What are the use cases where you think having an item's physical location would be valuable? We have some ideas, but I'm sure there are tons of things we aren't even thinking about.
This is a v1. If we continue to work on Nearby Items, what should we add, change, or modify to make it more valuable to you as a user?
Does it make sense to also show "nearby items" on Desktop computers?
Do you think that the current form of Nearby Items is good enough to ship in the Stable product?

I sure do - and I'm connected to it each time that happens, so that seems like it's related then.

Happy to enable it again with any logging to help troubleshoot

I do get prompted to re-auth a lot (I've got it set to never require it), but always with fingerprint. It's only when approaching a location with items associated that the prompt is for the full password (and especially painful cause I'm in my car about to enter my storage facility)

Hi jkane001,
This is very strange. It's probably a coincidence because the app can't decrypt your items (and hence read the location of your items) while locked. But we'll look into this a bit further and see if we can find any correlation.
We have been having issues with biometric unlock recently so it's possible that the issue is there and not with your physical location.
Thanks for letting us know 💙

Every time I enter a particular location that has an item associated with it, when I open 1Password (Android), I'm asked to enter my password. I have fingerprint auth set up, and it works right every other time, but for this one scenario.
Is it possible that geolocated passwords trigger manual login for some reason? It's annoying though that I've disabled location based passwords.

Thanks gayelpaso, we've got a team actively working to improve Search at the moment so I'll let them know.
We recently released Wi-Fi QR codes so I'm glad you found them helpful. I've already used mine to help family and friends get on my home Wi-Fi.
I'm excited to hear if adding your location makes your Wi-Fi easier to find (it has for me).
Keep the feedback coming and let us know if you figure out any gaps in Search (especially between Desktop and Mobile)

At this point so many good ideas, I had thought of the barcode idea but it's already been mentioned. I do have a QR code that comes up when I go to my Wi-Fi settings and I don't know if that was automatically entered for me or if I added it but it's a very useful feature and is along the same lines as the barcode idea. Something I noticed in the mobile version is that when I search for my Wi-Fi / router password, it doesn't show up. I don't know if it's because I added a slash to the description or what (I have tried remaining it t to see if that makes a difference) but when I go to my desktop to search for it it immediately appears. I'm not sure if this is a bug or what the current version. I know it's there, it's just even if I search for Wi-Fi or router, nothing happens. I'll play around with it tomorrow and see if I can identify what it's causing one 1password to miss it. I'll keep you informed. I am hoping the location feature will eliminate the problem. I'll try it. Thanks for all the great work you're doing on improving something that's already near perfect!
