Feature Request Dedicated “Backup Codes” Item Type in 1Password
Hi 1Password Team and Community,
I’d love to see a first-class Backup Codes item type added to 1Password. With two-factor authentication becoming the norm, I find myself juggling dozens of backup codes—and right now I’m forced to stash them in a generic Notes field. A dedicated object would make managing them much smoother. Here’s what I’d like to see:
- Checklist Interface
- Display each code as an unchecked box that you can tick off when used
- Visually cross out used codes without deleting them
- Audit Trail
- Automatically record when a backup code is checked off
- Record who (which 1Password account) marked it used
- Generation Metadata
- Field to store the date (and time) the backup codes were generated
- Secure Visibility & Sharing
- Obfuscate codes behind asterisks (like passwords) to prevent shoulder-surfing
- Ability to share individual codes (or the entire list) securely with teammates, with granular permission controls
Why this matters:
- Streamlines the recovery process when you need a backup code in a hurry
- Provides accountability in team environments (no more “who used it?”)
- Keeps your 2FA artifacts as secure and structured as your other credentials
Thanks for considering this! I’d be happy to provide any additional detail or use-case examples if it would help.
