How to use different passwords for app and website?

Hello,

I'd like to use different passwords for the app and the website. I want a very complicated password for the website, since I don't have to manually enter it anyway. On the other hand, when I'm working from home on my personal computer, which has biometric security, I prefer a simple password over a complex one. The problem is that I recently changed my password on the website, which also updated the password on the app. Then, when I tried to change the password on the app, it said to go to the website 😠.

Google says I can use two different passwords, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it. Can someone guide me, please?

Ok, that makes sense about the name, 1Password. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.

I’m on a Mac, and as for why I’d like to use different passwords, please see my other post here: Appropriate password complexity for my needs. | 1Password Community

As a workaround, I’ve found the setting in the app where it will (supposedly) never ask me for my password. We’ll see how that goes.  🤞

  • Hello markcleugh! 👋

Thanks for the question! Are you referring to your account password for 1Password? Or to the password for another website/app?

If you're referring to your account password for 1Password then you only have one account password that you'll use to unlock 1Password in all places whether it's the desktop app, the mobile app, or the web app in the browser. This one account password is why 1Password is called 1Password. 😁

Can you tell me a little more about why you'd like to use a different password for the app on your personal computer? And are you using a Mac or a Windows PC?

I had a really simple (four-number) password to get into the 1Password app on my computer. This was OK with me since I'm not too concerned about the security of my computer at home, but when I visited the 1Password website to check something out, the password required to log into the site was the same one as to log into the app, a simple four-digit number. This is not okay, so I changed it to something VERY complex (why not, I don't manually enter it anyway). Then, when I went back to the app, I discovered that that was now my new password to get into the app. This is unacceptable. I've also learned, now, that the only way to change the password for the app is to go to the website, and apparently, these two passwords must be the same!

This is aggravating, so I went back to the website to change it back to what it was, but it wouldn't let me use anything less than 10 characters! Unacceptable for home use!

So here we have a conundrum. I don't want a complex password at home, and I don't want a simple password for the website. 1Password, you need to figure this out. It's not rocket science, allow me to have two different passwords. Jeez.
