Just FYI. I did have some other issues with my display and it was replaced under warranty, so I was offline a few days. I did get Touch ID to work though before that happened. I waited a bit to see if the solution held and it seems it has, even through the replacement process.
What I did was go to the Touch ID and Password panel in "System Settings" from the apple icon drop down. I turned everything off and deleted the fingerprint. Then I restarted a couple of times. Then I just redid the fingerprint and turned on all the settings again. It seemed to fix the issue. I wonder if it will hold for the next update. Again thanks for your help and maybe this will help someone with a similar problem.
I have no idea if the problems with the display or some other hardware issue affected the Touch ID.
