4 years agoHi @FBobbioC,
...ask them the reason behind not moving forward with creating an MSI installer, please?
We are working on the MSI installer and for a while now, including looking into adding it to the Microsoft Store and possibly to winget in the future.
We are close to finishing the work, it needs a final QA testing round and if it passes, we should be able to ship it very soon. We do not provide an ETA for our releases as per policy.
It does not make sense that there are installers for macOS and Linux that are on version 8 and no MSI for Windows.
We do not currently offer PKG installer for 1Password 8 for macOS either, which is the equivalent of the MSI installer for Windows. We're working on both PKG and MSI as we speak but there are some obstacles we're trying to address before we can release it.
1Password 8 has a completely different technology stack from the previous 1Password apps (we're talking about going back half a decade at least) and all the packaging tools we had previously doesn't apply to 1Password 8, thus it will take time to rebuild our CI/CD tooling system for all platforms.
In this case for Windows, we did try to reuse our previous MSI implementation for 1Password 7 and it didn't work; in one case, the upgrade process resulted into a damaged app installation. We spent a lot of time trying to get it to work but it didn't work at all, so we had to drop the custom MSI installation script we had and go with an alternative third-party tooling solution, which took a lot of iteration and validation. Last week, there was an issue with the browser support integration, which we just fixed recently. We're still testing it and hopefully, it'll be done very soon.
For Linux, we were able to add more packaging formats over time as it has been out since May 2021. The packaging support was easier to add for various platforms compared to what we faced with MSI but it did take time. Even right now, we're still working on perfecting the ARM packaging support for Linux and hopefully find a way to offer browser support integration for the Snap/Flatpack versions.
