Just came across this post via a search. Sorry for the late reply.
Up until now, Microsoft was blocking "syncable" passkeys on their end, only allowing "Device Bound" passkeys, or passkeys setup through their proprietary "Microsoft Authenticator" App. A passkey within 1Password is considered "syncable" since it is not bound to a single device, but instead to a "cloud account" that can be synced across multiple devices.
But as of 11/2025, Microsoft finally opened up "Syncable" passkeys to a "preview". You can now successfully create and save a passkey within 1Password. But first an Administrator for your work tenant must join the preview (they do so within Entra ID's "Authentication Methods" specifically within the "Passkey (FIDO2)" authentication settings).
Once your work joins the preview, then Microsoft will finally successfully save the passkey without that generic "something went wrong" error message. And, now you would just select "Passkey" as the MFA option, no longer have to "pretend" it is a "USB Security Key" anymore, as some other previous forum posts mentioned to do as a workaround.
