Recover an account
Hello, a friend of mine has died and her family needs to access her passwords to close subscriptions and arrange paperwork more easily.
They have their "Emergency Kit" but not the password. Is there any way to reset the password so that a successor can access the data?
Thank you

Hello rafarq! 👋
I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. All the best to you and their family.
Unlike other services, a 1Password account is protected using encryption rather than just authentication. To access and decrypt the data in a 1Password account two secrets are needed:
- The Secret Key.
- The account password.
If your friend was part of a 1Password Families account then the family organizer can recover their account as long as you and your friends have access to your friend's email account: Recover accounts for family or team membersAlternatively, check to see if your friend left a recovery code for their account. This can also be used to recover access to an account: Generate and use recovery codes
Beyond that, there is no way to "reset" an account password by design. We have no ability to provide access to 1Password data, even if an original account holder asks us to let them in. We don't have the technical capability since the account password is the key that transforms a user's encrypted data into a readable form.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
