Security settings were changed automatically somehow.

Short-time user (2 months).  Everything was smooth until yesterday.

All of a sudden, 1Password started asking me to enter my master password every time I started Edge (W11).  Previously, it would only ask at long intervals (per the settings I had selected when I installed it).

I looked, and many of my security settings had been changed to require this, including a setting to use Windows Hello, which (for several reasons), I never use (and cannot use).

I put the settings back the way they were, but I need to understand how and why this can happen.  If it's a result of a Windows update, I need to have a way to prevent it in the future.  If it's a result of a 1Password update, I need to understand why the developers felt it appropriate to do so.

Thanks.

  • Hello Britt! 👋

Thank you for reaching out! 1Password won't change your security settings without your explicit action, or the action of your administrator if you're using a 1Password Business account. We recently released a new security review feature, do you remember selecting a security preset in a screen that looked like this:

These presets load different security settings, depending on your selection. Those settings can be previewed by clicking "Preview changes". Unless you clicked "Keep existing settings" you would have changed your security settings when clicking "Update settings".

If you don't remember seeing this prompt then let me know.

Thanks for the response, Dave.  I don't remember seeing such a screen and, if I had, my instinctive response would have been to "keep existing settings"; however, I've reached the age when it is possible that neither of those statements is correct.  So I'll assume that I did see it and made the wrong choice.

It's good to know that a Windows or Edge update cannot trigger the kind of behavior I saw.  That would be hard to work with.

Season's greetings and happy holidays to you and the 1Password crew.

I hope that your holidays were happy as well. If the issue occurs again then let us know and we can help further.
