Session expired for tab

After successfully using the browser extension for Safari to log into a site, there will be a lingering pop-up from 1Password with the message "Session expired for tab". I can't find this error message on any of the forums, hoping someone here can help. 

Here are the details: 

  • 1Password extension for Safari, extension version 8.12.8.26. 
  • 1Password for macOS is version 8.12.8 (81208026). 
  • I use 1Password to successfully log into a site. 
  • The pop-up message contains two messages: 
    • "To save a login, unlock 1Password first." I just used 1Password in the browser to login. 
    • "Session expired for tab." 
  • I'm experiencing this across my two macOS machines. 
  • This has been happening since at least February 2026. 

I have completely removed the extension and reinstalled, following the steps documented here: https://support.1password.com/remove-1password-browser/#safari  

I'd welcome any help/suggestions.

    To help me better understand the situation, could you answer the questions below for me:

    • What exact steps do you take when using 1Password to fill your information?
    • Are you seeing this behaviour on all websites, or only on specific ones? If it is a specific one could you share an example URL with me?
    • Do you use the 1Password desktop app alongside the Safari extension, and if so, is the app running (either open or in the background) and unlocked at the time this happens?
