Uninstalling 1Password
Hello! I have 1Password 8 and 1Password 6 (for Mac) both installed (recently signed up for a membership). Is there any data that both 1Password 8 and 6 both use? I was reading this Support Article o...

4 months agoHello ScarySulley! 👋
Thanks for the question! 1Password 6 and 1Password 8 are separate apps and don't share files between them. Once you've migrated your data to 1Password 8, and see all of your items in the modern app, then you can uninstall 1Password 6 by completely closing it and then dragging it's icon from the /Applications folder to the Trash.
You can leave the 1Password 6's support files where they are and they won't cause any issues. However, if you would like to remove them (after verifying that you see all of your items in 1Password 8) you can find those local support files here:
- If you installed 1Password 6 from the Mac App Store: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/
- If you installed 1Password 6 from our website: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/
If you were syncing 1Password 6 using Dropbox then you'll find those files here:
- ~/Dropbox/Apps/1Password/1Password.opvault
- ~/Dropbox/Apps/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain
I hope that helps.

Hi 1P_Dave,
Thank you for your reply.
Even though I got 1Password directly from Agilebits / 1Password directly (all versions), I do have three 1Password-related folders in the ~/Library/Containers/ folder including one that is named similarly to 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper, but instead it says it's a 1Password browser helper. The other two are a 1Password Launcher and 1Password Safari Extension Companion. I'm guessing those three folders are related to 1Password 8? Hope that makes sense, cause that does seem a little confusing.
Perhaps we should reframe this question and ask what files / folders are related to 1Password 8 that we should NOT delete?
For Dropbox, I do have the opvault, but under a single 1Password folder opposed the Apps/1Password folder.
Regarding the preferences files. I'm guessing all versions of 1Password use the same preferences files? So those should be kept.
One last question, in the support article I linked to, it says if you use 1Password for Safari (I'm guessing that's the browser extension), it say's not to delete any folders with 1Password for Safari or com.1password.safari in the name. Why is that? If we install the Safari extension, we're not supposed to delete any related files related to the extension if we decide to uninstall the Safari Extension?
Quote from linked support article:
If you use 1Password for Safari , do not delete any folders with 1Password for Safari or com.1password.safari in the name.
Sorry for so many questions, but thank you your assistance nonetheless!

Thank you for the reply! I just wanted to underline that there's no need to delete any folders, leaving folders from previous versions won't cause any issues and they won't conflict with 1Password 8. 1Password 8 does not share support files with previous versions of 1Password.
1Password 8's files are located here: ~/Library/Group Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password
If you use 1Password for Safari, do not delete any folders with 1Password for Safari or com.1password.safari in the name.
1Password for Safari is a separate app with it's own support files. The guide is warning that, if you do choose to remove the support files of previous versions of the 1Password desktop app, that you should be careful not to remove the support files of 1Password for Safari.
