What are the alternatives now that AgileBits has abandoned Safari?

I've been using 1Password for more than a decade. I've brought it to hundreds of people and every employer I've worked with. I'm hugely pro-1Password, but it seems they are no longer interested in Safari on Mac.

  1. It's been nearly a year now without any stability in Safari. You must disable and re-enable the extension multiple times a day. Even when you do this, it always shows Locked, and most page interactions don't work. Passkey usage must be done within less than a single second or it fails. In every sense of the word it's unusable, and they know it.

  2. Interactions with paid business support are so useless that the answer is clearly "go away you bother us". For example, you find a bug and report it. After weeks of useless go-arounds you finally get to a developer, they confirm the bug and tell you to get a certain version as a fix. You apply the fix, but it's inconsistent. When you try to follow up, you get someone telling you to start over, check your versions, reinstall everything, try reinstalling your OS, etc. They'll happily repeat the same questions that are answered no less than 6 times already in the ticket.

  3. The problems are 100% replicable on brand new Macbooks which have nothing else installed. Straight from Apple, set up a user, log in, install 1Password, see the same problems. I could happily give me a macbook with every supported version of MacOS all showing the same thing. But nobody in their support will ever follow up if I don't uninstall and reinstall and reboot my macbook. Even if I did this round on the last reply, even if I send them a picture of the mac lab we have. It's clearly designed to frustrate people WHO ARE PAYING FOR SUPPORT into leaving them alone.

It's kind of hard to believe from a company who used to be Mac-only, but I guess it's just me stuck in the past. All evidence suggests they are entirely focused on their windows customers... so much so that even paying business customers using Macs aren't worth their time and attention.

I've lost this battle at work. Nobody wants to use them any more. People (who are security conscious and smart) explain to me that they'd rather copy from a spreadsheet than continue fighting with it every day. So we're abandoning it in the enterprise.

Since AlgileBits is abandoning the Mac, what are people finding to replace 1P?

  • Hello jorhett! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into issues with 1Password in Safari, that's definitely not the intended experience. There are a few open issues that our team is looking into and hope to fix as soon as possible.

You mentioned that you have a support ticket open with the team, are you able to provide the Support ID of that ticket so that I can take a look? The Support ID looks something like [#ABC-12345-678].

Nothing explains the current state of being better than this screenshot. From outside all the way, 1Password for Safari is incoherent

    1. 1Password is unlocked and available
    2. The icons in the form field say that 1Password is locked and to unlock it (clicking them does nothing)
    3. The option to hide the form inserts in the field is enabled, but the icons won't go away
