6 months agoNew in Beta: App Unlock Presets + Unlock with Device for Mac
Hey everyone. We’ve got two exciting new features ready for you to preview in 1Password for Mac (Beta release channel). 🎉
🔒 App Unlock Presets
A new Security Review section in the sidebar lets you quickly review and update how and when 1Password locks on your Mac. Choose from a selection of optimized presets: Convenient, Balanced, or Strict, or fine-tune settings to match how you actually use your device.
🖥️ Unlock with Device
When enabled, 1Password will lock when your Mac locks, and unlock when you unlock your Mac. (No extra prompts!) It uses built-in macOS platform security to make your workflow smoother and keep your data safe.
"Unlock with device" is enabled by default in two of the new presets. You can switch presets or adjust individual settings anytime in Settings > Security.
What’s next?
Our goal is to make 1Password work the way you do: less fiddling with settings, fewer interruptions to your workflows, and the same high level of security you expect. So we're going to roll out the new unlock experience to everyone over the course of the summer.
✅ Windows, Android, iOS, and web
✅ Support for Team and Business accounts
✅ Extensive admin controls for team-wide auto-lock settings
👉 We’d love your feedback, especially on Unlock with Device!
To try out the Mac beta: choose Settings > Advanced > Release channel > Beta, and then choose About > Check for Updates.
These features are currently only available in Beta for Individual + Family accounts on Mac (not Business accounts — yet!)

Any plans to implement this feature on Linux? I already unlock the GNOME Keyring with my login and password on Ubuntu, so it would be nice to unlock 1Password too. Maybe add a credential in the GNOME Keyring and check during the session start up?

How do I trigger the security review? It worked for a while a couple months or so ago but recently I noticed it's been reset and I'm not aware of how to get that popup again to change the settings and it was really convenient having the "Convenient" setting on

Hello
Is this unlock feature still in beta?
- XianNewmanNew Contributor
It says this will rollout to everyone over the summer, which has 3 days left. Am I better to just wait for the rollout to non-beta users?

I just installed the current BETA today on both an M1 Pro MacBook Pro, and an M4 Pro Mac mini.
The MBP provided this option as expected. As reported below, had to install the BETA then restart the app as it requests AND also fully quit out of 1Password and re-open to get the option to be present. Tested locking both 1P and the laptop, then unlocking and it worked.
Repeated the process on the Mac mini, but the option is not present. The "security review" and some other changes to the settings appeared, but no option to 🖥️ Unlock with Device.

Both of my Macs have lost the 🖥️ Unlock with Device beta feature. I see that I am still on the Beta release channel. But...this is my current status below. I have tried the restart of the Mac but no change. This seems to have happened fairly recently.

I’m sorry that you've lost access to beta features after updating. The way things work right now, when the current production update is newer than the latest beta build (as is the case right now) our updater automatically moves you to the production version of 1Password. Since beta features are tied specifically to the beta channel, they’ll disappear when you’re on production.
Our team is working on the next beta release, and we’ll get it out as soon as we can. Hopefully the update process can be improved in the future to prevent this situation from occurring.
For the time being, if you'd like to keep testing a specific beta feature, you can switch to the nightly version. Or sit tight and wait for the next beta version which we hope to release soon.
edit: 8.11.8-42 (beta) is now available. If you're using the beta release channel, please update.

It's gone for me as well on the BETA channel.

I think it would really help to clarify this new feature if you could just post a table with the 3 presets (Most Convenient, Balanced and Strict) and the default value for each preset (Unlock, Unlock with Device and Auto-Lock). It's just a simple 2 dimensional table, but it would go a long way in improving understanding. Thanks.

I agree that this table would be extremely helpful, especially (if) when this capability is rolled out to business and teams accounts.

1Password for Mac 8.11.0 (81100017) These options don't appear to be present.

Updated to "81082027, on BETA channel", can't see any of these options. I have a family account.
Looking forward to these new options — the current number of password prompts is just silly

Ooooh! This is awesome. I like the 3 options for convenience => strict.
Very nice allowing one-click security to full customisation. Covers everyone!
Will deffo do some testing on all this!
