Update concern on Windows app v8.12.0

I don't recall ever being prompted to install updates for the Windows version of the 1Password app because I have it set to install updates automatically. However, on January 26, a small Update button appeared at the bottom of the 1Password app.  I clicked on it and got a small dialog box stating that it was updating to the latest version and would automatically launch 1Password after the update is completed. Since I login to Windows 10 using a non-administrator user (for security purposes), I always have to enter the administrator password when installing new software or updating existing software. However, I didn't get prompted for the administrator password during the process, nor did I see any status dialog boxes to indicate what was happening. Also, there was very little hard drive activity based on the hard drive status led. 1Password never restarted after several minutes. So, I waited some time just to be sure then checked the Windows 10 Processes tab for Apps and Background processes to see if there was any indication that any 1Password processes were running.

Out of an abundance of caution, I don't want to login to the 1Password app on this computer until I am certain that everything is safe and secure.

When I launch the 1Password app and look at the About window, it shows "1Password for Windows 8.12.0 81200013, on PRODUCTION channel" which seems to be the latest version. I have a exported the diagnostics file and can send it to the support email if needed.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

  • Hello Capt_KS! đź‘‹

It's always good to be careful and cautious when it comes to security. 1Password checks for updates once a week:

    • If 1Password is locked, it will update itself automatically when “Install updates automatically” is turned on in Settings > Advanced.
    • If 1Password is unlocked, it will notify you that an update is available.

If you installed 1Password using the MSIX installer then admin privileges not required for updates. That being said, you mentioned that you have a diagnostics report and our team would be happy to take a look and advise further if you send the diagnostics report to support@1Password.com along with a link to this thread and, if you have it, a screenshot of the prompt that you saw. After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I'll be able to locate your message and make sure it's gotten to the right place.
