1Password on Mac Safari is unusable

Filling in passwords is what it’s all about  and that has gotten significantly worse over the past years. The big refresh made everything more confusing and the core password filling also worse.

  • On Mac Safari it mostly does not work, it got so bad i switched from Safari to Chrome on Mac. I also wrote Safari development about it, they are complicit.
    1. Often the widget inside the input field does not appear,
    2. when it does, when you click it often nothing happens,
    3. when something does happen it takes a while for something to happen so you wonder whether it will,
    4. otherwise you use cmd+shift+X to force the 1Password in-browser popup to appear from the tray, it shows a login form and does not open fingerprint handler,
    5. when it does open the fingerprint handler it takes many seconds to do so without a loading indicator so you wonder whether it will,
    6. when it has opened the fingerprint handler it typically immediately loses focus so you're forced to take the mouse and click on it to re-focus it,
    7. when you do complete the fingerprint auth it often does not update the 1Password in-browser-popup UI to be unlocked, it stays locked,
    8. especially in docked-to-desktop webapps it will never unlock that popup, even refreshing does not work.  On Mac, all docked webapps use safari even when you have set Chrome as your default browser so 1Password ruins all docked webapps on your computer
    9. refreshing the browser after this failure to unlock 1Password only sometimes makes it show up unlocked
    10. On Mac, all docked webapps use safari even when you have set Chrome as your default browser

So what you do is open the 1Password desktop app and manually copy username from there to the browser, then manually copy password from the browser. Also that app has ruined its desktop shortcuts, favoring some annoying Spotlight competitor that is worse at offering password functionality that the actual desktop app.

Temptation is big to suggest using Chrome instead of Safari, well, I did switch to Chrome because of 1Password, but in Chrome it works worse and worse too. To focus on 1 thing at a time let's focus on Safari here.
