Looks like the fix for this problem was rolled out in version 8.11.29.1 of the Chrome extension, updated Jan. 19. I've downloaded and installed it, giving it "On all sites" permissions in "Site access," and so far, it's working smoothly.
If anyone else is seeing the same behavior described earlier, the update appears to be the fix.

I had the same issue on my Surface Pro, 11th edition with Windows 11 on Arm. Turned out that my desktop app (Arm native) would not update itself. I have now de- and reinstalled from the Windows Store and have both app and extension on the same 8.12.2 version now. Fingers crossed that this will fix the issue – which also caused my device to start into Windows RE on reboot, btw.
