I've been using a different password manager. I could easily log in to the add-on in the Edge browser via my Yubikey BIO, without using a password. I've been testing 1Password since yesterday and I'm surprised it doesn't have this important feature. After all, entering a password every time on a computer used in shared spaces (e.g., at work) is a significant threat to the security of our most important password (because the password to the password manager is our most important password).

Thank you for the feature request! Our developers are working on a way to unlock 1Password using a passkey which can be saved on a Yubikey, the feature is currently in beta: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)

As someone in DevOps who unlocks 1Password umpteen times a day across multiple environments and devices, this would be a massive productivity boost. Please make this a priority and push to get it implemented.

Thanks for the feedback! Have you looked into unlocking 1Password using biometrics? That would provide you with an easier way to unlock 1Password on different platforms. I'd love to learn more if there's a reason why biometrics aren't an option for you.

Thank you for the request! If you'd like to test this functionality then take a look at the passkey unlock beta: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)

That has been in beta since 2023. Almost 2 years in Beta just means this feature has very little priority, unfortunately. To test it, we must create a Test account, can't even use a normal account, which doesn't make it easy.

Hello,
Just resurrecting this thread as I have the same original core issue. I don't have touch ID available to me all the time, but I always have a yubkey available. It would be great to be able to unlock the mac app or the chrome app via yubikey as they are both passkey style solutions.
This seems to have been on the beta for a while, do we have a rough ETA when we can see it come to the masses?
I am on 1P Family btw.
Thanks,
Shiveen

Hi shiveenp, thanks for joining the 1Password community! We typically cannot provide specifics as to if or when features will be added, or moved to general access. With that in mind, I don't have a date to share regarding broader access to passkey unlock. Your continued interest, and patience is greatly appreciated though! Let us know if we can help with anything else, and thanks again.

It would be great to unlock 1Password on any OS with a Yubikey and/or Passkey.
I'm using Linux (Ubuntu 24.04) and I don't have a fingerprint reader.
For Linux, since it doesn't yet support Passkeys natively, the 1Password browser extension should support it via Google Chrome.
I'd like to avoid entering my password every time I need to unlock 1Password browser extension.
Not only it is annoying but also poses a huge security risk (key loggers) by having to type in the master password every time.
When do you plan do finally release the "unlock with Passkey" feature?

Thanks for reaching out. That functionality is being tested as part of our passkey unlock beta where you can store a passkey on a security key like a YubiKey and use that to unlock 1Password: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)
Passkey unlock is still only available for individual test accounts as part of the beta. I don't have any news on when this functionality will be rolled out for existing accounts.

Hi Dave. Is there any update about using a Yubikey (5C) to unlock 1Password (instead of my master password, or Windows Hello)? What is your expectation when i will be availible?
Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback! It sounds like passkey unlock is exactly what you're looking for. With passkey unlock, you can save a passkey on a security key and use that passkey to unlock 1Password. You can read more here: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)
Im not creating another account for the passkey feature. Hopefully it wont require that in GA.
At the moment, passkey unlock is only available for new individual accounts created as part of our public beta. The team hopes to have more to share regarding passkey unlock for other types of accounts, including existing accounts, in the future.

1P_Dave chiming in with my use case.
Why would you like to unlock 1Password for Mac using a YubiKey + PIN rather than using one of the > > following options:
- Your account password
- Your fingerprint (Touch ID)
- Your Apple WatchRepeatedly entering my strong password is possible, but repetitive. After years of using 1Password I am looking for any optimization I can get to make 1Password auth challenges as quick as possible. Password prompts are very jarring when you are in the zone workIng.
My Mac lid stays closed. I need the desk space for other things. This means I cant use Mac biometrics.
I don't have an Apple Watch.
Im not creating another account for the passkey feature. Hopefully it wont require that in GA.
So you are saying this feature will allow pairing with a Yubikey and the passkey used in that pairing will then be usable to unlock 1Password?
If so thats a nice net-positive optimization and better than repeatedly entering my strong password. Thanks
