High memory usage with v8; what could be wrong?

I upgraded to v8 and now I'm seeing extremely high memory usage. On my M1 iMac, V7 used about 150MB but now with V8 I'm seeing memory usage of almost 500MB. A 3x increase in memory usage after upgrad...
