How to upgrade to version 8 from version 4

I am running a very old version of 1P. After a recent IOS update to Ventura 13.1, 1P no longer works. I do not currently pay a subscription fee. I would like to update to version 8, and pay the requisite fee, but I am under the impression that it is not that simple b/c I am running such an old version. Please advise.
