The installer package was designed for updating via automated methods. You could use it but you'd always need to manually update. I'd recommend talking with the technical team to see what part of the process is having trouble. Perhaps they can help you overcome that trouble and enjoy auto-updates.

If you deploy 1Password for Mac with the PKG installer, updates won’t install automatically. To update 1Password after you deploy it to your team, download the latest version of the PKG installer and redeploy it.
