Magic Keyboard w/TouchID and Passkey Issue on Mac Mini M1

When I try to use TouchID on a Magic Keyboard to access an account through a website with a passkey setup, the TouchID functionality does not work. I am presented with a 1Password "Sign in with a passkey" prompt that requires me to click on "Sign in". I have not tested this on all my passkey accounts, but TouchID does not work on BestBuy, Ebay or PayPal.

I can unlock 1Password using TouchID on Magic Keyboard with no issue.

Please advise how to resolve this issue. Thanks!

1Password Version: 8.10.32
Extension Version: 2.22.1
OS Version: 14.4.1

It sounds like 1Password is behaving as designed inside of Safari on your Mac. Once you've already unlocked 1Password, using your passkey only requires that you clicking Sign In in the passkey prompt. You don't need to authenticate using Touch ID again.

In other browsers on the Mac, like Chrome, you can press enter on your keyboard when you see the sign in prompt but a bug in 1Password for Safari doesn't automatically focus the passkey prompt. For the time being, you should be able to press the tab key once after the prompt appears to focus the prompt and then press enter to complete sign in.

Why is this 1Password functionality different on my iPad with Touch ID (and my iPad/iPhone with Face ID)? When I access the Best Buy website (not the app) using passkey through my iPads/iPhone, I can activate the passkey access with the applicable Touch ID or Face ID.

On the iPhone and iPad, passkey saving and sign in is handled using iOS AutoFill (a built in technology/API created by Apple) and 1Password only provides the data for the experience. That's why you'll see a slightly different experience on each platform.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, I am able to sign into the websites.

So Touch ID functionality only unlocks 1Password? Why do I have to click on the Sign in button for the websites instead of using Touch ID?

Thanks for the reply and for the screenshot. It looks like 1Password is already unlocked so it's normal that you wouldn't be prompted to use Touch ID when you see the "Sign in" prompt. You'll only be prompted for Touch ID when 1Password is locked, not every time that you sign in with passkey.

What happens when you click on the Sign in button in your screenshot? Are you able to sign into the websites in question?

Yes, I can unlock 1Password in the browser using Touch ID without issue.

I'm familiar with the "Unlock 1Password" button. This is not my issue.

Screenshot of the prompt I see is included in this response. It is the same for Bay and PayPal.

  • Hello rldefelice! 👋

I'm sorry to hear that Touch ID isn't working when signing in using a passkey. Saving and signing in using a passkey is handled by 1Password in the browser, are you otherwise able to unlock 1Password in the browser using Touch ID without issue?

If 1Password is locked then you'll usually see an "Unlock 1Password" button, can you post a screenshot of the prompt that you're seeing so that I can better understand the issue?
