Masked email failure case

Hello,

I've seen that several masked email bugs/features are being tracked internally. I didn't see this specific use case, but apologies if you're already aware and this is a duplicate.

I've seen several sites whose new user registration process starts with a form that first requests an email address. It then checks if that email address is already associated with an account, and if it's not, it then takes the user to the full sign-up form where it requests email, name, password, etc...

On the initial form that only requests an email address, the 1Password extension does not offer to create a masked email. I believe that in this case, the 1Password "brain" should be adapted to recognize that this form is the beginning of a new user registration so that the user is offered the opportunity to create a new masked email.

An example can be found at https://www.americastestkitchen.com/. I've included a screenshot as reference. I'm unable to show the full example of the 1Password extension only showing the "no results" message because I've since created a login for this site, so you'll need to trust me that 1Password doesn't offer to create masked emails on this specific form.

Thanks,
Greg

I hear you. It's not a simple task at all.

In this case, I was able to use a fake email to progress to a new page/form, where the masked email feature worked. Unfortunately, this experience varies across sites that don't re-expose the email field.

I know this request is tracked elsewhere, but since the Masked Email API at Fastmail only requires a description when creating a new masked email, being able to trigger that API directly when creating a new 1Password login would potentially be a universal solution for situations where the preferred workflow does not work as intended.

At any rate, I'm sure you'll think of some good ideas and iterate the feature over time. I appreciate you all and what you do.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hey Greg,
    Thanks for reporting this.

There's a very delicate balance in the 1Password "brain" that we continually adjust to find the right spot between "1Password is super helpful" and "1Password is soooo intrusive that it is simply annoying!".

If we show up in random email fields that don't have context (e.g. a part of a bigger form) then 1Password will simply show up almost anywhere even though it is not a field that users need to autofill, such as a users search field (where you search other users) etc.

The question is - when you get to that full registration form, are you able to change the email there and create a new masked one? If not, then we'll definitely want to improve that!
