Migrating from US to CA

I am aware of https://support.1password.com/move-copy-items/ however it has some key limitations:

  1. Archived items won’t move easily
  2. User account hierarchy has to be recreated in a family account
  3. inter item links aren’t preserved
  4. vaults have to be recreated

for a new account these may be trivial, but my family account has years of history that I am worried about losing some links or something else. It would be so much more convenient to have the ability to single-click move between regions.

while I didn’t care much to do this before, the new political climate is making me very uncomfortable with continuing to have my 1Password data domiciled in the US. Is the team doing any work towards improving migration between regions?

Hi ginkgobiloba, thanks for your question.

My colleague Blake covered this recently, and I really can't say it better so here's his post:

There aren’t any plans to change this process at the moment. Because of how 1Password’s security model works, changing your account region isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Your data is encrypted locally on your devices before it ever reaches our servers, and accounts in different regions operate independently from one another. This means there’s no direct way to migrate an account between regions without setting up a new one and moving your data manually.

We understand this process takes effort, and we aim to provide as much guidance as possible through the support article you've mentioned above. If you have any concerns or need help with any part of the transition, feel free to reach out to our team via email at support@1password.com—we’re always happy to assist!

I can certainly understand your interest in changing regions, and that the prospect of moving everything would be daunting for a family account. I'm sorry that there's not a more expeditious route at this time. I would be happy to share your feedback with the team, but I can't say if or when other options might be available.

Let us know if there's anything we can help with, and thanks again!
