Request: Turn off username guessing in the apps [RESOLVED]
When I go to create a new login, the user name is prefilled with an email address I haven’t used in years. This shouldn’t have any email address, especially when I use Fastmail’s masked emails. I hop...

Hello everyone,
I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:
You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date
Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

I am on beta and it now fills a username. There are articles all over the internet why it’s a bad idea to reuse a username. Why does anything need to be filled…. At all? There are 2 separate posts on Reddit about people not linking this.
Also1P_Dave how is this showing “Solved” when it’s not?
I am moving my mom and in-laws to Bitwarden in the next few weeks because of this. The family account is created and I just need meet up with them to help them. Why on earth you’re not giving us the option to shut this off is beyond me.

9 months agoThanks again for the feedback, I've shared all of your comments with the team that's working on item creation and, while I can't promise any specific changes, they'll take your comments into account when planning future changes to how items are created in the 1Password app.
Are your mom and in-laws using email aliases as well? Or do they mostly use the same email address for everything? The latest beta version of the 1Password app allows you to choose which email address is suggested by choosing a default identity: Choose your default identity and credit card items
This change will make it to the stable version as soon as possible.

Marking a post as a solution to a thread doesn't mean that the issue/request itself is solved or closed. It's a way to highlight the most up-to-date answer for anyone who stumbles onto the thread in the future.

It literally says "✔️Solved" at the top of the page, and when people ask why, you say "it doesn't mean that it's solved." This is absurd.

My wife is pushed over the edge with this. She asked me if we can move her to Bitwarden now since we have the family account set up for my mom.

I hear you and I appreciate you sharing your feedback. I've already passed your comments along to our product and development teams. I know that this change has been frustrating to you and your family and I wish that I had an update to share. While I don't have any news on whether a toggle will be added at this time, the team is always evaluating feedback to continue to improve the experience.
If I do have any news to share in the future then I'll make sure to update this thread.

1P_Davelook at the frustrated people in this thread and on Reddit. 3 months since I started…. and nothing.
The last 14 years I recommend YOUR product to people, now they are asking me why this is happening…. and frustrated with me.
I don’t see anyone asking for this feature. You keep saying they are working on improving it, nothing about an option shutting it off.
Please tell me how people are frustrated with this, people asking for an off switch, and nothing is happening? Even Apple fixes things when they do stuff wrong (Touch Bar years ago, and they added ports back to the MacBook Pros).

My mom uses Outlook/Hotmail and has, I think, 5 aliases that she uses for different things (1 for shopping, 1 for important stuff, etc.). My mom also has an alias she uses for my dad since he doesn’t even touch a computer, but Social Security and Medicare want email addresses, so she does that also.
My father-in-law uses a few Gmail accounts and uses the plus addressing, and some email addresses are that (he recently discovered this and likes it).
My mother-in-law uses her iCloud and I think has 3 email addresses and uses them like my mom. I think she has a Gmail account she uses too.
This is also an issue that I’m getting now because of this. I recommend 1Password to a lot of people over the years to people, a lot of them are my parents’ friends (I’ve been using it since 2014). They are up there in age and they make new accounts in 1Password 1st, or have 1Password open next to the browser, because they don’t trust the extension. So, now they are calling me saying there is an issue, and I tell them it’s a new feature. I told them if they want, I can help them migrate to a new password manager. 2 I know are looking into this, but now I have to spend my free time dealing with this. This is why I am beyond mad at this.
I also find it very easy to have Fastmail and 1Password open at the same time. I make an email address with my domain and set it all ready in 1Password and then make my account. Does everyone do it this way? No. Is there an easier way? Maybe. But do I like it this way? YES, and that’s all that should matter to you guys.
I made this post 3 months ago… 3 months and all we are getting: we are working adding this and that to it, but not once have anyone from 1Password said “ya know, you’re the customer and we understand this feature isn’t for anyone, so we are giving you the option to turn it off.”
All we want is in the settings: create new logins with most used email address? On or off. That’s all we want. Why is it so hard to make customers happy? I’m happy you guys add new features, but for something like this, give us an option to turn it off. And it should be off by default.

Hmm, I'm not seeing the same issue on my end. Can you try clearing your browser's cache and then sign back into the community and try to post again? If that doesn't work then please send an email to community@1password.com so that our community team can investigate further.

Please don't forget that not all logins are email addresses and especially that not all login names are the exact same! It's still without any doubt necessary to be able to turn this off entirely.
