Share Vaults across accounts [Feature request]

I have a family account that I share with my wife and two kids.  My sister (let's caller Alice) has a personal account.  I have a friend (let's call him Bob) who has a personal account.  Let's call me Charlie.

My parents are aging and my sister and I have access to their bank account and are setting up automatic bill pay.  I would like to create a vault that Charlie and Alice can both see and edit that contains information about our parents.  I know that Charlie can invite Alice to become a member of the Charlie family plan and thereby give access to Alice, but in order to do that Alice must export all her current entries from Alice's-personal-account and then import them into Alice's-account-in-Charlie's-Family.  That's a hassle, and it also means that if Alice later marries and starts her own Family account, she'll lose access her parents' information housed in Charlie's Account's vault.

Charlie and Bob play squash and use SignUpGenius and a Gmail account to manage a Sunday doubles squash match with invitations that go out weekly to 50 players.  Bob travels a bit, and so does Charlie and they switch off the weekly duties of managing the interaction with SignUpGenius and Gmail.  Each has their own 1Password account, both have shared the SignUpGenius and Gmail credentials with each other, but both would like to be able to amend them.  Neither wants to be a member of the other's "family" for the purposes of 1Password, but they both want read/write access to the shared credentials.

Request: please allow Vault sharing across paid 1Password accounts.  The sharing should allow transfer of ownership of the Vault from account A to B, from B to C, and from C back to A.  The sharing should allow the owner (A) to share with many people (each with their own paid accounts) B, C, D...etc. and should allow A to manage which parties can read, write, etc. the details in the shared vault.

  • Hello jupiters_spot! 👋

Thanks for reaching out! Have you considered inviting Alice and Bob as guests (not family members) to your 1Password Families membership? Guests are given access to a single shared vault and they can continue to use their own 1Password accounts for their own logins and other items. You can read more about guest accounts here:

That being said, I can see how it would be useful to be able to just share a vault with another person, who already has their own 1Password account, without having to invite them as a family member or guest. I've passed along your feedback and request to our product team who will consider adding such a capability in the future.

I'm looking at https://support.1password.com/guests/ and have a question, the answer to which you may want to add to that page. The question is, if I (the owner of family account) invite multiple guests, can I give different guests access to different vaults, or is there just a single "guest vault" that all guests have access to?

If it is separate vaults for each person, I see my self creating "Shared with Alice", "Shared with Bob", and maybe even "Shared with Mallory" vaults in the near future.

  • I had an additional thought that might clarify the ask.  A given person who already has a 1Password paid account can very reasonably want several other parties to share a vault with them and continue to use a single 1Password account.  I could have a family account and with my single 1Password account want access to vaults:

    • owned by the Boy Scout Troop where I'm a scout master
    • owned by my parents where they share details that help me care for them
    • owned by my buddy who runs a squash match invitation registration process
    • owned by my church where access to email lists of congregants are managed
    • etc.

Having to switch accounts each time I want to see another Vault's credential would be tedious, and I dare say, contrary to the idea of having "one password".

After inviting someone as a guest to your 1Password Families membership, that other person would see the shared vault in the 1Password app (and in the browser extension) alongside all of their other vaults.

The 1Password app is designed to work seemlessly with multiple accounts: How to use multiple accounts

Thanks for your note Dave.  When I looked in to sharing a vault with a guest, it appeared that if the other party (Alice, say) already had a 1Password account she would have to create a second 1Password account that was useful only to for guest access of my shared vault.  Am I wrong about that?

If I'm not wrong, then the solution you offer, while workable, is clunky because Alice now has to make an informed choice of which account she's logging into in order to find the correct credential.  This get messy when you're in a browser, having already logged in to your 'base' 1Password account but now need a credential that is stored in the OTHER account where it's accessible in the vault I shared to Alice.

Thanks for the reply. A guest would indeed receive a new Secret Key and choose an account password for their guest account. However:

        1. They can use the same account password that they already use for their regular account.
        2. They can add both their regular account and the guest account to the 1Password app (or the browser extension) at the same time to access all vaults at once. If they use the same account password for both the regular and guest account, or use biometrics to unlock 1Password, then all vaults will unlock at once.

        I hope that helps!
