Hello @India, thanks for this question. 👋 We appreciate your long-time support of 1Password, and I'm happy to chip in a few thoughts here!
Although I can't cover every difference between 1Password and iCloud Keychain, there are a few prominent ones. I should say first that, from our perspective, any password manager is better than none. The important thing is that you're able to handle your data safely, and that you have a solution that works for you.
With that said, here's a few highlights 1Password has to offer (I'll speak chiefly about 1Password 8 here, for the sake of keeping things simple).
- Browser autofill (and Universal Autofill!) - these features allow you to fill logins into websites without needing to go into the main 1Password app. With Universal Autofill, a feature we just introduced in 1Password 8, you can quickly fill information into apps on your desktop too. It's pretty cool. 😎
- While recognizing that your use case is Mac-centric, 1Password does make it significantly easier to manage your items across devices on all major platforms, should you need to.
1Password offers a greater variety of item types. While iCloud Keychain can store passwords, credit cards, and digital sticky notes, 1Password gives you dedicated options for storing your passport information, Social Security number, reward schemes, and more. Plus you can store files in 1Password!
Family accounts! Should you decide that you'd like to get your whole family onboard with 1Password, you can store items in a shared vault where any family member (or combination of family members) can use them - this can be really handy in situations where someone needs the wifi password, for example. When you're the owner of a family account, you can also help other family members recover access to their account if anything should happen.
The Secret Key - this is a major security feature that we use to "anchor" your account to devices you're using. Even if someone were to guess your account password (the one you use to log in), they won't be able to access your data, because they don't have the Secret Key needed to decrypt it. It's an extra layer of security that makes compromising your 1Password data very, very difficult.
1Password can also store and fill one-time passwords for websites that use two-factor authentication.
Oh, and you can use it on an Apple Watch, as well. 😃
