Windows 11 setting default password generation
I've figured out how to generate a password in the Windows 11 app and the Firefox extension for the same operating system. I also found the option to set the generation method as a default. What I do...

Hi geber! Thanks for writing in.
The default password type set in 1Password in the browser will be used on all websites, not just the one you're currently on. Just to note, this is per browser and per device. So, if you're using Chrome and Firefox on your Windows PC, or Firefox on two different PCs, they could have different defaults. The 1Password app also has its own default separate from the extension. So, you could set PIN Code as the default in 1Password for Windows, and Smart Password as the default in the extension.
With Smart Password set as the default, 1Password in the browser will use a random password with numbers and symbols if the rules for the website are unknown. There isn't an option to fall back on Memorable automatically. However when you see a password suggestion (example below), you can click the settings button to select a different password type or otherwise adjust the parameters manually.
Would that option work for the use case you had in mind? If not, could you share a bit more about your use case and how you might use the feature day to day? Thanks again!

It looks like I can't get quite what I want; I was hoping to avoid having to click the password suggestion settings button.

It isn't currently possible to have 1Password fallback to the memorable passwords option if it isn't able to detect the rules for the page. Is there a reason why you'd like to have memorable passwords be the default fallback option?
When using 1Password, you shouldn't have to memorize or type in most of your passwords. Can you tell me more about why you'd like to generate memorable passwords as a fallback by default?

I suspect we agree memorable passwords are easier to type that the random passwords that 1Password generates. Sometimes have to manually copy a password from one device to another. For example, I want to unlock my camera, which is not connected to my phone. Or I want to log into a website from a shared computer owned by the organization I volunteer from, so I look up the password on my phone and type it into the computer. (1Password is not installed on the shared computer.)

Thank you for sharing those use cases, I agree that using a memorable password can be useful in many situations.
Out of curiosity, if you prefer Memorable Passwords then why not just set that to be the default rather than Smart Passwords? Wouldn't you run into the same issue with Smart Passwords as you would with Random Passwords where they would be trickier to type in than Memorable Passwords?
